The intersection of Theresa Lawrenz's and Mathias Weinfurter's positions is the examination of public space, its boundaries and materials, but also changes over the course of history. Both work as sculptors and bring together selected works in the joint exhibition that have formal or thematic references.
Both artists are connected by their studies in the Rhine-Main region with its high density of culture, but also with regard to the dense urban space and traffic. The topic of cars and traffic is currently part of many political debates. How can we deal with the legacy of the car? How do the materials, structures and boundaries of different transportation systems affect public space and the human body? The two artists explore these and other questions in the exhibition.
Theresa Lawrenz deals with the symbols and forms that can be found in traffic, on the highway and on cars. She shows newly created works that play with these familiar forms and transfers them into a new context by changing their dimensions and materiality.
In various spatial installations, Mathias Weinfurter interprets the historical narrative of the construction and inauguration of the first Reichsautobahn and its sabotage, of which no visual records exist. A modern highway sign brings the events into the present and refers to contemporary issues of remembrance culture and politics.
